End’s New Balance 878 “Grey Gull” Continues Model’s Resurgence

QUICK TAKE:

The New Balance 878 is a silhouette that has begun to reemerge from the American company’s archives in 2019. British retailer END. continues its partnership with NB by launching another limited-edition sneaker, the New Balance 878 “Grey Gull”. The early ’90s runner is given a clean colorway that mixes the influence of the Grey Gull with retro hi-visibility color pop.

DESIGN:

The heritage sneaker is elevated with luxurious leather and suede and features a grey and black upper, reminiscent of the namesake’s plumage. Vibrant hits of orange, red, and yellow add eye-catching pop to the logo, tongue, and outsole, while also reflecting the bird’s own beak. The shoe is finished off with ABZORB cushioning, and END. branding on the lace tips and insole.

ANALYSIS:

It is always good to see brands like New Balance mixing up the models they offer. NB has a rich history of retro runners, but recently has kept to a strict release regimen of 574s, 999s, 998s, and 997s (depending on the year). The 878 is a fresh (albeit archived) model that adds variance to the brand’s offering. The continued partnership with British retailer, END., is also solidly executed here, pulling inspiration from the UK-based brand’s native land, while also providing sneakerheads with a clean colorway that fits the retro look of the model.

RELEASE INFO:

A raffle is currently being held for the END. x New Balance CM878EN ‘Grey Gull’ on the British retailers website.
