QUICK TAKE:
Official release information for the newest COMME des GARÇONS x Nike collaborative project has finally been confirmed by the Swoosh this week. The Nike Dunk low collaboration had originally been spotted during September 2019’s Paris Fashion Week. We now have an official, initial release date of May 14th. Check out more details below.
DESIGN:
The COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Dunk Low is featured in two colorways, both in darker shades of black and tan. Both models feature an upper constructed from a lightweight, translucent stretch-woven fabric called Nexkin. Beneath layer of Nexkin, the models have widely different looks. One features a black base with all-over ‘CDG’ print, while the other features tans that highlight the upper’s construction. Overlays of leather heel and Swooshes finish off the shoe.
ANALYSIS:
Is Nexkin quietly becoming the next big thing in fashionable, functional footwear? The material was seen first in the Nike Vapormax 2019. Atmos and Asics used it in a late-2019 collaboration, as did Virgil Abloh on his Off-White x Air Jordan 5’s. The material’s lightweight strength and unique texture make it perfect for the futuristic, utilitarian stylings so popular today. The ability to expose and hide different layers, using either translucent Nexkin or colored variants could be used in a variety of components in the future, all while lowering the weight of the sneakers it’s embedded within. The question is, do people truly like this almost brutalist material, or are they just willing to buy it due to the namesakes attached?
RELEASE INFORMATION:
The COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Dunk Low will release in men’s and women’s sizing at all CDG and Dover Street Market locations — including the DSM E-SHOP — on May 14 for $260 each. An additional drop at select partner accounts will follow.
