April 2020: DIOR x Air Jordan 1

QUICK TAKE:

The worlds of luxury fashion and sportswear have always flirted with each other, but designers like Virgil Abloh have accelerated and championed the growing crossover between the two schools of apparel. The graying space between high fashion and streetwear is effectively closed now, as Dior will officially collaborate on an Air Jordan 1 model with Jordan Brand.

The upcoming collaboration was announced by Kim Jones via Instagram, as Dior debuted it’s Men’s fashion line in the US for the first time ever. There are still limited details on the retail price of the shoe, but enjoy detailed images and information below as anticipation builds for this ground-breaking crossover.

Nike has confirmed the sneakers will be released globally at select Dior stores in April 2020.

DESIGN:

The sneaker is rumored to start at $2,000. It will be made in Italy, and features a predominately white and grey upper which pays homage to the French atelier’s mainstay hues. The upper is mounted on a translucent icy blue outsole, which features ‘Dior’ and Jordan Brand graphics within the sole. More Dior branding is found throughout the model, starting with the Swoosh, which is covered in a Kim Jones-designed jacquard repeating Dior logo and ‘Dior Air’ on the iconic Wings logo and tongue tag. Finally, the sneaker is finished off with subtle contrast stitching and an accompanying metal hangtag.

ANALYSIS:

The Dior x Air Jordan 1 is surely to be one of the most expensive sneakers ever, and the question is, as always, is it worth it? Unlike the recently released adidas x Prada collaboration, this model seems to have been invested in more by both parties. The clever use of fan favorite features, like the icy translucent outsole, combined with luxurious, high-end Dior details make this first-time combination a sure success. What will this first foray into high-end x sportswear mean for the rest of the industry?
