adidas takes arguably its most iconic shoe, the Stan Smith, and gives it the coveted GORE-TEX treatment with this October release. While the shoe stays true to its usual look, adidas upgrades the materials and gives us the most premium Stan Smith, ever.
DESIGN:
Streetwear and techwear enthusiasts love GORE-TEX, and its exciting to see the all-conditions material on a staple shoe like the Stan Smith. GORE-TEX provides a next-level water-proofing, but otherwise, changes to the Stan Smith silhouette are minimal. White tumbled leather is used on the upper, with the iconic green heel tab. Normal ‘Stan Smith’ branding is missing from the heel, instead replaced by a ‘GORE-TEX INFINIUM’ hang-tag and accompanying embossed geometric logo. The tongue logo is also printed in almost invisible white.
ANALYSIS:
Sneakers like the Stan Smith are perfect for material updates like this addition of GORE-TEX technology. Although adidas is not being excessively innovative with this release, its giving the consumer a tried-and-true model with highly coveted tech that appeals for its name and functionality. Taking iconic models and upscaling them with better themes or materials is the perfect way to not dilute timeless colorways and models – and also give a new level of freshness.
