Air Jordan 8 gets a Tennis Edition

QUICK TAKE:

The 2019 US Open begins at the end of August, and Nike and Jordan Brand have spared no expenses bringing their best offering to the annual sporting event. The Flushing Meadows, NY tennis tournament will feature Nike athletes in NikeCourt’s new New York-inspired Fall 2019 apparel collection, and also feature a modified Air Jordan 8- made for play on the tennis court.

DESIGN:

This hybrid Air Jordan 8 is dressed in a “White Aqua” colorway that was originally used in a 2007 women’s-exclusive AJ8 model. The upper is the classic AJ8 design, but the mid and outsole have been replaced by the NikeCourt Air Zoom Zero sole, worn by Nike’s tennis elite.

ANALYSIS:

This Air Jordan 8 tennis edition is not the first time Jordan brand has made forays into tennis and other sports. The brand currently sponsors French soccer club Paris St. Germain and has developed footwear for Serena Williams and Roger Federer. As basketball footwear continues to struggle to pay the bills, JB is investing in a variety of sporting opportunities to alleviate that problem.

It would be cool for more athletes to wear cross-sport footwear. Basketball and tennis share a variety of characteristics, and athletes like Andre Agassi donned basketball sneakers to show-off on the hard court in the early 90s. Still, it
