Valentino x Birkenstock Arizona for Fashion Week Paris: Is Birkenstock the Crocs of 2019?

As a part of its 2019 Paris Fashion Week collection, Italian luxury house Valentino debuted a collaboration with iconic sandal maker Birkenstock. For the show, models donned a black and a “Valentino” red pair of the Birkenstock Arizona model. The black pair features a large white “VLTN” emblazoned on the side. Both are constructed of a supple leather, with more Birkenstock and Valentino branding on the footbed and “Birkenstock” embossed on the buckles.

“I chose to make this collaboration with Birkenstock for the same reason people choose Birkenstock every day. No matter what you wear, who you are, no matter your gender or social background, no matter your age, your style, no matter if you care about fashion or if you do not, Birkenstock has its own universal language. I loved the idea of approaching the DNA of our maison, represented by the individual and intimate world of Couture with something that it is so free and adaptable. To me, this is the definition of inclusivity,” said Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative director of Valentino.

Could Birkenstock be this year’s Crocs? In 2018, the rubber clogs ended up on the runway and at the center of collaborative projects with Post Malone and Alife. Birkenstock has already collaborated with Opening Ceremony and Rick Owens in the past, and are again collaborating with Rick Owens in 2019. However, when approached by Supreme and Vetements to do collaborations, Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reicher said, “I don’t give a s** about fashion. Fashion is, pffftt, what is fashion? Inditex is doing fashion 12 times a year. What is this nonsense?”

While it would appear this recent collaboration with Valentino says the opposite of that statement, we’ll wait to see.

Look for the Valentino x Birkenstock Arizona Sandals to be released at select Valentino boutiques globally and on Valentino.com. The models will also hit select Birkenstock boutiques and Birkenstock.com soon.
